Wisdom Saving Throw: A Therapeutically-Applied TTRPG Group for Depression and Anxiety

New group begins: Sunday, March 22 at 12:00pm | Advanced registration required | $480*

Group facilitated by Trevor Smith

Wisdom Saving Throw is a new, 8-week in-person therapeutically-applied TTRPG group for individuals seeking support for Depression and Anxiety.

The group will meet weekly on Sundays for 3-hours, and each session will include a group check-in, 120 minutes of gameplay, and 40-45 minute of processing support.

The group will be led by AMP clinical intern, Trevor Smith, utilizing Dungeons and Dragons (Fifth Edition) and the “Game to Grow” method developed by Drs. Elizabeth and Jared Kilmer, along with their co-founders Adam Davis and Adam Johns.

By joining the group:

  • You will experience social connectivity through interactive play
  • Develop new DBT-informed distress tolerance skills
  • Utilize narrative gameplay in a collaborative environment to challenge anxiety-related thought patterns
  • Learn skills in problem solving and decision-making in order to combat feelings of powerlessness caused by anxiety and/or depression
More on the group’s name and development from Trevor Smith: “A ‘saving throw’ within the context of Dungeons and Dragons refers to an attempt to endure something. In game terms, it is what a player attempts when they are trying to dodge a great gout of fire, or resist mind-control, or to prevent themselves from letting terror take over. Wisdom within the context of Dungeons and Dragons is one of the key six statistics that make up a player character – it is their ability to intuit, to notice, and to experience. Combining the two created, in my opinion, an evocative and useful summation of what the group’s purpose will ultimately be – to strengthen participant’s abilities to endure life’s challenges by using their intuition, observation, and experiences.”

Fees and Registration:

Cost is $480 for the 8-week group, and a deposit of 50% must be made to register for the group. Payment plan options are available. Completion of an intake appointment is required for new clients, maximum fee for intake is $40. This group will not be billable to insurance.

If you have questions or are interested in registering for this group – please contact Trevor via email: tsmith@andersonville.com

Wisdom Saving Throw is open to any individuals 18+ who reside in Illinois. The group meets in-person, and will run with 4-5 participants.

Space Considerations and Accommodations:

We are committed to making our space welcoming and accessible. Our office is located on the first floor with no steps to navigate. If you use a mobility device, please let us know in advance, and a team member will be happy to assist you with a smooth entry. We also have two ADA-compliant, all-gender restrooms.

For public transit, we are a short walk from the CTA Red Line’s Bryn Mawr station and CTA’s Broadway and Peterson bus lines. Metered street parking is available on Broadway and Bryn Mawr Avenues.

The group room is furnished with armless, cushioned chairs designed to comfortably accommodate a wide range of body types. The room’s layout can be adjusted to ensure everyone feels comfortable and has enough space. Masks are available in the lobby for those who wish to wear them, but they are not required for clients or staff at this time.

For this group, we also intend to have available during gameplay:
Andersonville Mindfulness & Psychology is an LGBTQ+ affirming practice and encourages those who identify as part of the queer community to join this peer support group. This group is neurodiversity-affirming, and prior table top role play (TTRPG) gaming experience is not required, but welcomed.
